Program Updates

Community Schools:

No major updates–committee reviewed lead agencies in the area as well as how position descriptions are developed/CSCs are hired.

Packett Fund:

Elizabeth provided an overview/update on the Packett Fund which is available for Community School Coordinators to access to advance the community school strategy.

Internship:

Last year started a paid internship program for young people to have an opportunity to be active and engaged community leaders. Have a meeting with the Research Park Corporation to discuss future funding and have been talking to other funders.

Survey:

UMB and the Office of Community Engagement are planning a survey of community members (needs/programs) in partnership with the Education Committee–Committee had looked at questions which have not been finalized yet

Community Updates

Committee discussed mechanisms for checking on promises made during the transition process of the closing of Steuart Hill. There has been difficulty hiring a crossing guard–Committee would like to work with the school on the hiring

There is also a need for additional crossing guards at James McHenry.

Should put pressure on the district to post the currently open crossing guard positions, identify intersections in need of crossing guards and develop a paper trail advocating for better crossing guards, and engage with the media. Committee will move forward with these action steps

Steuart Hill appeal yesterday was dismissed, which was expected. Plan to turn the building into a temporary shelter has been shelved and the building will be disposed of via an RFP process led by the City

Committee Chair Elections

Edith nominated Abigail, Abigail accepted. Agenda for the next year is learning what people want and reaching out to the parents and families and children who live in the area and learning from them. Abigail was reelected chair.
