Project Updates
Lord Baltimore Theater: stabilization is complete, working on scheduling a tour for the preservation committee and the commercial development committee. Fundraising for the next phase is ongoing
Franklin Square Historic Mural: the Franklin Square historic mural is on the 300 block of N. Fulton there is a need to stabilize the building as well as one adjacent—there is a private owner interested in purchasing and stabilizing the properties, one of which is stuck in probate (the building the mural is on). The process is moving forward.
Malachi Mills: please send Elizabeth contractors who might be interested in doing the work
Poppleton Historic District: Poppleton Now! Interested in creating a Poppleton National Historic District, Scott is going to October meeting to present the possibility. Committee will support the work and connect the neighborhood to CHAP
Trees in Carroll Park: Baltimore City Forestry planning on 40-60 trees in Carroll Park. Trees cannot be planted on the hill, even if existing trees fall down. Also not allowed to dig because of the archeology of the hill and the Maryland Historic Trust has an easement on it. Friends of Carroll Park will send a letter to the Maryland Historic Trust with the SWP Historic Preservation Committee support.
Pigtown Sculpture: four or five years ago Pigtown Main Street received a grant for a 35 foot tall Pig sculpture at the corner of Washington Blvd and MLK, however the original site is no longer viable. It has now been constructed because there was originally a plan to place it Carroll Park at the entrance but that has been changed. Second choice is corner of Monroe and Washington Blvd which the community supports.
The Committee discussed expanding focus to include arts and cultural resources. Potential to make progress on shorter term projects as well as increase engagement. Committee could have an arts and culture planning initiative. Committee will elect a chair in October and then begin planning the arts and culture aspect.
1020 W Pratt St up for a zoning change. Zoned R8 through the recent Transform Baltimore initiative. Owners wanted it to be industrial, neighbors were very opposed. Issue has been returned to the councilperson and the neighborhood association. Building has not been bought by the ‘owners’ yet.
First Mencken House Open House November 24th (Sunday before Thanksgiving) . BNHA will be moving in the first of October. Basement will be shelving for artifacts
October 8th is the CHAP hearing for 1525 W Baltimore St asking the developers to lock in their plans
