Great neighborhoods have great history–and the Southwest Partnership neighborhoods are some of the most historic in Baltimore. From the B&O Railroad to the Mount Clare Mansion House, Union and Franklin Square Parks to Hollins Market, and the HL Mencken to Edgar Allan Poe Houses there’s history everywhere you look. The Southwest Partnership Historic Preservation Committee works to preserve, promote, and protect the history of the Southwest Partnership area.
In 2016 the Committee’s goals are to build a list of historically significant buildings in the seven neighborhoods and develop plans for preserving them as needed and to develop and place signage and other markers that will celebrate and share the history of the neighborhoods.
In order to meet this goal we’ve been working on a number of projects including:
- Creating and installing historic signage marking the neighborhoods (Barre Circle, Franklin Square, Hollins Roundhouse, Pigtown, and Union Square) on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Organizing walking tours of neighborhoods to note historic and significant buildings and their condition
- Holding events for neighborhood residents to share their stories about the history of the area
- Developing a digital archive for the neighborhoods
The Historic Preservation Committee meets the third Monday of every month at 6pm at the Irish Railroad Workers Museum 918 Lemmon St.
Scott Kashnow, a resident of Franklin Square is the Chair of the Committee, and Michael Mellett with the Irish Railroad Workers Museum is the Vice-Chair.
