Questions from UMB (Education highlighted in yellow)

Supporting Family Voice/Identifying Needs

Pastor White: Planning for being part of the opening of the Poppleton Rec Center in terms of youth programming in gardening, food justice, food resources, see their role as building community around the production of food and the protection of green space

Abigail–just connected with NatureWorx, which is based in Masonville Cove and are doing work around mindfulness and healing related nature work

Van Brooks/SAFE Center:

SAFE opened in 2015, runs after school/OST programming with a focus on career exploration and hands on learning. One of the things they see is that there are many competing smaller programs that make logistics difficult

Another challenge is a lack of youth engagement in the decision making that impacts them. Have found success in doing aptitude tests and learning style assessments with kids to provide them with support in advancing their interests and goals

Issues with access–one is just getting the information out, others are issues like barriers around transportation etc

School Family Councils

Way for folks who want to be more involved with schools to be involved. Is there anyone who already serves on a school-family council? Laura–may be interested in James McHenry–will reach out to Mark Byrd

In Person Meeting

–next meeting potentially in person outdoors with NatureWorx

–Laura would like to learn about CURE Scholars program

–Shareen suggested Higher Achievement

CCB

–after school program starting with Paul’s Place, ESOL classes starting, Back to School Night September 14th, two week reading program, food bank is starting. Jane will connect with Brenda on food access

Announcements

T is concerned about the early dismissals due to lack of air conditioning that works at Franklin Square as well as the lack of a promised crossing guard after the closure of SHAA. Elizabeth will follow up and T will connect with Ms Cynthia
