Community School Updates
Been hearing a lot from families about needing basic needs–working with Lifebridge to coordinate a health and hygiene products for students and families at area schools
CSCs are working on a couple of events at Steuart Hill and Charles and Carroll Barrister. Steuart Hill is planning for some community engagement events and partnering with Franklin Square and Frederick.
Charles Carroll Barrister–first ILT meeting of the year. Currently two ongoing fundraisers–Papa Johns fundraiser and Joe Corby fundraiser. In second week of ESOL classes for families in partnership with Clay Pots. Will be having a celebration for Hispanic Heritage month sharing the wide range of cultures at the school. School Family Council is up and running and the food pantry will be providing food support to families and in the classrooms. Have a partnership with Lifebridge Health to do free immunization shots for families (12 kids total). Committee discussed the language needs of families at Charles Carroll Barrister–there are students and families who speak Arabic as well as Korean and Japanese as well as Spanish and English speaking students.
Youth Internship Updates
Seven interns through the internship program. Have participated in community engagement opportunities, met with Council President Mosby. Currently working on an impact project–would like to do a mural in the community.
Isaiah–has been working with Access Art on planning the project.
Sonya shared that through the internship they have learned collaboration skills, how to reach out to resources and partners to advance their goals.
Ayanna shared that one of her goals for the internship is to experience having a job or an internship in an area, such as nursing, that she’s interested in. Isaiah would be interested in learning more about financial management and starting a business.
Internship is a collaborative learning experience between adult staff and the interns
On November 5th the interns will be at the City of Refuge to volunteer at an engagement to support veterans

Role of the Education Committee
Jane–would like to look at how the community can help the school (Charles Carroll Barrister) address language learning needs. Camille would like to look at a common need across all the schools. Quincy would like to focus on literacy.
Elizabeth asked the Committee to think about the types of activities that the committee would like to do–what is the operational role of the committee
Ms Cynthia sees it as a grassroot group that can learn from experts on various subjects as well as learn about what is going on in the community.
We will revisit the conversation with a little more structure in a future meeting.
Project Updates
Received one application from James McHenry for Packett fund–will follow up with other schools
School Board finally filed motion to dismiss the appeal, coalition put together a response, they will submit a response and then the judge will decide whether or not to hold a heari

Robert Katende, the chess coach who trained 10-year-old chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi, featured in Disney’s “The Queen of Katwe”, will be joining us IN-PERSON at our October chess event. The Board Room-Chess will be hosting Robert while he visits the United States from his home in Uganda. Join us for a screening of the film and this one-time only opportunity to meet Robert and hear his story.
