Latinos United for Health is raising awareness for the Latino population all throughout Baltimore City. Latinos comprise the fastest-growing racial or ethnic group in Baltimore City and nationwide. By mid‐century, Latinos will constitute nearly one-third of the nation’s population. In Baltimore, the Latino community represents a diverse and heterogeneous group, with many different cultural heritages (Central American, South American, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban and other Hispanic/Latino backgrounds).
Latinos United for Health wants to bridge the gap so that Latino citizens can overcome some of the challenges facing their community. Some of these challenges include access to a primary care provider and prenatal care for women. In a comprehensive effort with the Baltimore City Cancer Program, the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) Community Engagement Center, the Southwest Partnership, and Latinos United for Health have put forth a campaign to raise awareness about Latino health in general. Latinos United for Health will host a health fair and provide information that can serve as a tool for public health efforts to advance the health of the Baltimore City Latino community.
The Baltimore City Cancer Program is a community-based program that was an initiative of University of Maryland’s Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Since its inception, the program has provided services for over 33,000 Baltimore city residents. Some of the screenings include breast exams, cervical cancer, oral cancer, and colonoscopies. Members from the Baltimore City Cancer Program, the UMB Community Engagement Center and the Southwest Partnership will be canvassing the Mt. Clare community to raise awareness about cancer prevention, information on obtaining free mammograms, colonoscopies and pap smears for Latino Families in Mt. Clare.
