  • Welcome and Introductions

 

Khandra opened the meeting and all the guests introduced themselves. 

 

 

  • Approval of Minutes

 

The Board reviewed the September 2018 minutes and offered no corrections:

Jane motioned to approve the minutes. Dan R. second, All approved. The motion passed.

 

 

  • Community Announcements

 

– Nancy – Her Church is having a Bull/ Oyster Roast $55 @ The Wicomico

– Bill – UMB was at the State Retiree Fair promoting the Live near your work program

-Ashley – They are hosting their Community Meal on Saturday. Free lunch

-George – George and his band will be playing in Union Square 4-7PM on the 28th

-Scott – There are several Halloween themed events happening in Franklin Square this year but the association is not hosting Franklin Scare! this year. The Friends of Carroll Park hosted a clean up of Carroll Park with 160 volunteers from JHU.

-Phyllis – on behalf of Francis and Kris thanks for the welcome party.

-Kelleigh – Pigtown is hosting a community Yard Sale 

– they are also having a clean up at the horseshoe pit on oct 21st from 10 to 1

-and participating in the Mayors cleanup on the 27th

– and showing a movie Coco on the 31st at the parking lot at Cross & Washington

-Curtis – Boo your block on Hollins Market neighborhood and Halloween in the market.

 

 

  • Financial Report – George

 

George reviewed the finance report for the 1st 9 months of the year.

-Expense  – running over on office supplies mostly due to copying expenses (this is generally a good thing because it means that more things are happening in the neighborhoods) we should adjust our budget numbers to reflect this growth and anticipate in next years budget.

– on the Revenue side:

-$30K coming from the SBGP soon

$40K coming from the City and State for BRNI

 

He will bring a draft budget for next year to the next meeting

 

Questions:

  • Why did we not spend anything to the Community Leadership development line item?
    • We did not raise the funds
  • For OED expense and ED Consultants we will have the money this year

 

Jane – Let’s meet and develop a fundraising strategy.

 

 

  • Mt Clare Community Association presentation

 

    • Megan and Jose presented the physical development plan that MT Clare has been working on.
      1. They are a very diverse neighborhood
      2. With lots of history
      3. The WWI & II Memorial at the circle will be a focus point
      4. There is lots of opportunity to revitalize housing
      5. Refer to the slides for more of the neighborhood issues and maps 
      6. They want more green space and trees
      7. Address the vacant houses
      8. Some of the priority spots are 
        1. SW Police Station
        2. 420 S Mount St – to be made into Artist and Craftsman housing
    • Motion by Diana: To support Mount Clares community vision plan. 2nd by Dan R. All approved. The motion passed.

 

 

  • Announcements of State Grant Awards – Elizabeth

 

    • BRNI
      1. $50K small grants
      2. $20K Malachi Mills house
      3. $200K Fulton Ave
      4. Pauls Place

 

 

  • Task force – Ashley

 

    • First meeting had a great turnout.
    • Discussed anti panhandling campaign, flooding the area with services, and developing a list of resources
    • Scott – Eric Booker of Housing code enforcement warned of unintended consequences especially of expanding and adding services.
    • We hope in six months to have tangible outcomes.

 

 

  • Executive Directors Report – Michael

 

    • Goldseker Annual meeting a tour will be a lunch on Tuesday the 27th of November. Staff will prepare a slide show and after lunch they will take a tour.
      1. Lunch is 11:30-1:30 on the 27th
    • Maybe we should add to our agendas quarterly updates from our anchor partners similar to the way we get updates from the committees.
    • 1313 & 1315 West Baltimore Street: Michael is negotiating sales contracts – 3 actually.
      1. Little Pages will rent back until their inventory is exhausted.
    • Hollins Market – There was an article recently in the BBJ discussing the issues between War Horse and the City Markets Corp. The Executive Committee will be meeting on the 29th with the Baltimore Markets Corporation to get some answers and discuss a path forward.
      1. We need to know what money has been raised and by who.
      2. JR asked what about the neighborhood.

 

 

  • Committee Reports

 

    • Housing:
      1. No Motions.
      2. Two events
        1. One at the SW Baltimore Charter School
        2. The 2nd will be at Hollins House
    • Education:
      1. October meeting – Kirwan Commission
      2. Please vote for Question 1
      3. The November meeting will feature Lucy Steinz: Social and Emotional Learning Program.
    • Commercial: 
      1. Got 2 bids – Working with Plano Coudon
      2. Working with MHT to use the funds
    • Safety
      1. The liquor store at Baltimore and Carey was closed for 5 days and things were calm. We should continue to work on the liquor stores.
      2. The gates are in full swing.
    • Workforce Development: 
      1. Haven’t met this month
    • Vibrant Streets:
      1. Thanks to Elizabeth for the small grants applications
    • Preservation:
      1. Motion (Scott): The committee is recommending SWP to hire an attorney, contingent upon funding, to represent the neighborhoods. 2nd by Dan R.
        1. Jane – They should be a professional that knows the ropes.
        2. All in favor. The motion passes.
    • Governance:
      1. The annual meeting will be the last Saturday in January
      2. Please read and approve the conflict of interest policy

      • Scott requested that UMMC report on the status of the Methadone clinic relocation.
