Public Justice Center

https://www.publicjustice.org/en/

Workplace Justice Project–focused on improving job quality for all Marylanders, making sure everyone has work with dignity. Do ‘Know Your Rights’ presentations, represent workers when their rights are violated. Take fewer cases with potential systemic impact. Also do policy advocacy–working to get more worker friendly jobs passed.

Have a grant to provide Know Your Rights education to women workers working in jobs where they may be misclassed as independent contractors. There are benefits and protections that workers get only if they are classified as employees.

Dave Rodwin – rodwind@publicjustice.org – direct line: 410-204-8513

Grant is focused on benefits–both employment and public. Presentation can be both in person and virtual.

Joanne asked about legal requirements for workers to declare their documentation status–Public Justice Center does represent undocumented workers, law does not require folks to disclose their documentation status and it is illegal to extort workers by holding their documentation status over them.

Black Women Build Baltimore

Program in west Baltimore renovating vacant homes for homeownership for Black women in Baltimore interested in owning their own home.

Initially a workforce development model–added a component where potential buyers can also work their own jobs and take classes at other partners.

One of the biggest challenges is the financial piece–making sure that people are financially ready for homeownership. Provide coaching and support through the financial piece.

MTA Bus Passes

Can purchase passes online, can also get tokens at the store.

Can’t get tokens for the first four and last four days of the month

Sometimes the cards don’t work–can be multiple reasons why the card doesn’t work. Have to be sure to tap out of the metro

Folks have also had issues with cards not working, updating older cards online, and buying a monthly pass and getting a weekly pass.

Tokens–two tokens give you a day pass–25% discount on a day pass

Have fareshare through the mobile app–decide what pass product you want to load with what account, and then those pass products get automatically loaded to that account

Community Internship Program

There are often many community members who are looking for administrative/’inside jobs’’. Want to find out if there are organizations who participate in this roundtable who might want to collaborate on sharing community interns as part of an internship program that would also provide job experience.

Paul’s Place might be interested, Habicorps may also be interested, 10:12 Sports, Phase 3, Bon Secours, Second Chance, may be interested–based on and could add to SLYC model

Elizabeth will reach out to some funders to see if they might be interested–please connect with her if you are interested in talking more offline
